GEORGETOWN, GUYANA - The Spotlight Initiative, on June 30, hosted a sensitization session with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ+) persons as part of the programme’s goal to equip individuals with information on Gender-based Violence (GBV) that would empower more persons to be better able to assist someone in need of support.

Sixteen members from six local LGBTIQ+ groups were treated to presentations on GBV and LGBTIQ+ persons, gender and development, and the spectrums of gender and sexuality and were also provided with information on referral pathways which includes emergency contact numbers for making reports for persons affected by GBV f.

The sessions were facilitated by Ms. Wemyss De Florimonte, GBV Coordinator with the UNFPA, Mr Adel Lily,  Manager Gender Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Human Services and Social Security and Mr.  Anil Persaud, Managing Director, EQUAL Guyana.

Participants expressed that the information shared was valuable, given the need for a further understanding of GBV  among LFBTIQ+ persons.

LGBTIQ+ persons are key stakeholders of the Spotlight Initiative, given the multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination they face. Planned follow-up sessions will be held as the programme continues developing strategic communications to promote awareness across a wide target audience to eliminate GBV and violence against women and girls (VAWG).
