In observance of International Women's Day 2022, the Spotlight Initiative in Guyana sought to raise awareness and help develop solutions for achieving gender equality by addressing how women can be protected in matters concerning citizen security and the role that everyone must play in working towards the elimination of violence against women and girls.

Three prominent female social media influencers were engaged to be part of an online discussion on Citizen Security and Social Inclusion. The influencers: Entertainer, Poonam Singh; Makeup Artist, Renee Chester; and Media Personality, Macaela Cameron shared their views while responding to three questions:

  • How do we ensure more women and girls are aware of their right to safety and security online?
  • Discussion: Economically empowered women are considered more likely to feel more secure to disclose GBV. Discuss what happens to those without such economic security.
  • How can influential persons in society help build a culture that is safe for women and girls?

The discussion was moderated by UN Guyana's Programme Communications and Advocacy Officer, Colette Hytmiah-Singh.

This event sought to capitalise on the large platforms of these influencers to help raise awareness of GBV in Guyana.
