BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan − In the area of journalism, where information shapes our understanding of the world, the role of journalists as drivers for change cannot be overstated.

In Kyrgyzstan, a groundbreaking project under the global Spotlight Initiative, in partnership with UN Women and the Media Sabak Public Foundation, has spearheaded a transformative journey in journalism and media. At its heart lies the endeavor to reshape societal consciousness, tackle pressing gender issues, and pave the way for a more democratic and equitable society.

The project, led by dedicated journalism faculty dean and professor Altyn Asanova and other lecturers and practitioners, recognizes the primary role gender-sensitive journalism that plays in shaping public perception. It acknowledges the importance of building a more gender-equal and democratic society founded on positive consciousness, and it strives to harness the power of journalism to make this vision a reality.

Critical force for change

In many regions of Kyrgyzstan, gender equality still remains elusive, dependent on individual attitudes and familial contexts.

“Journalists have become a critical force for change in this context. They uncover, report, and disseminate stories that highlight the persistence of gender inequality. These stories, whether concerning sexual harassment, gender violence, or other pressing issues, serve as a mirror reflecting the need for transformation”, - underlines the project’s importance leader of the working group Altyn Asanova.

Gender-sensitive journalism course

The Gender-Sensitive Journalism course for students of journalism faculty, a cornerstone of this initiative, equips future journalists with the innovative tools and knowledge needed to address these issues transparently, democratically, and professionally. With 8 topics covered over 16 hours of lectures and 7 practical topics spanning 14 hours, the curriculum integrates gender-sensitive journalism as a fundamental aspect of journalism education.

One of the critical aspects of this course is its focus on practical skills. Students will not only better understand gender issues in the media realm, but also learn how to conduct media monitoring and apply other innovative techniques in their journalistic endeavors.

Recognizing the evolving demands of gender-sensitive journalism, the curriculum pivots from the traditional, theory-heavy approach. It emphasizes hands-on experience, ensuring that future journalists can apply their knowledge in a real-world context.

Dismantling harmful gender norms

Moreover, the developed training program introduces new innovative tools and practices such as the Gender Action Learning System (GALS) which also brings a new creative approach for students to engage both theoretically and practically and apply these new tools in their own lives.

Not only GALS provides an enabling environment for self-reflection and analysis, but also plays a crucial role in dismantling harmful gender norms by empowering participants to be introspective and challenge their individual biases, behaviors, and perceptions.

Through the GALS methodology, individuals engage in a transformative process that not only encourages personal growth but also actively contributes to breaking down gender stereotypes and fostering a more inclusive mindset. These shifts align with broader educational reforms designed to empower students with a gender lens and practical skills to promote gender-sensitive journalism in the country.

Transformation through education

The abovementioned project is pioneering in many other aspects. While the need for gender-sensitive journalism is clear, the curriculum development process demonstrated a commitment to meeting this need efficiently. The collaborative efforts of educators and professionals resulted in a comprehensive curriculum that adheres to the changing dynamics of journalism. Moreover, the flexibility of the curriculum allows it to adapt to the unique needs of different educational institutions.

“Since September 2023, the curriculum has been included in the academic program of the Bishkek Humanitarian University, but the project's potential goes beyond a single institution. Discussions are underway to expand its reach to other universities, reaching future journalists, PR professionals, and even librarians. This inclusive approach underscores the project's commitment to societal transformation through education”, - marks Mrs. Asanova.

First results achieved

The enthusiasm of the students is also evident. Gender-sensitive journalism introduces them to new perspectives and sparks their passion for addressing pressing issues within their society. For many, it's a topic that resonates deeply, as they recognize its relevance not only in their work but also in their personal lives.

By encouraging open dialogue and providing a platform for these discussions, the course on gender-sensitive journalism empowers future journalists to confront gender inequality and shape a brighter future for all.

Promoting Gender Equality

The success of this course and manual highlights the critical role journalism plays in societal transformation. It reminds us that journalism is not only about reporting the news but also about shaping narratives using gender-sensitive and non-violent language, addressing social issues, and promoting change to achieve gender equality.

As Kyrgyzstan continues its path toward a more democratic and just society, initiatives like this one, offer hope and inspiration for a brighter future where both media and academia strive for greater gender equality and fairness. This underscores the significant role and impact of education, particularly in the field of journalism, in shaping a more just, gender-sensitive, and equitable world.
